Aerial views of Pretoria

Postby Wizzard » Sun Jan 24, 2010 8:29 pm

Spent an hour in the sky today, in the rear seat of a Cessna 182P, camera in hand.
Pity the cloud cover over Pretoria was a bit low, and we were restricted to 6000ft above ground level. The clouds give a 'milky' effect to the images. Nevertheless, I decided to share four pics. Murphy's Law being what it is, the cloud cover lifted about an hour after we landed.
Images have all been resized to 1744 x 1308 to maintain detail.

Image 1. Part of the CBD, with Church Square towards the lower LHS. (looking SW)

Image 2. Aerial view of the Telkom tower. (looking Northwards)

Image 3. Loftus stadium (looking Southwards)

Image 4. A better view of the CBD. The dark glass clad building is the Reserve bank, and the next tall building (2nd from the left) is the ABSA tower. (looking SSW)

Thanx Wizzard! Those are massive!
I've never been to the city myself-Joburg is the closest I've ever been.

Maybe, one day, I'll be lucky enough to do a 'flip' over the JHB CBD. If so, there will be images posted.

Diva...take a drive through Wellington. You'll get much the same atmosphere as Pretoria, without the irritations...seriously, the place reminds me of a farming town, not the capital of the country.

Having said that, the only part of any of those pictures (I think) I've been to is Church Square, and that was by accident trying to get out of the place after a visit to the zoo!

Being from Pretoria myself, I find those pics pretty cool. Pretoria's not that bad but seeing as I've never lived anywhere else there's nothing I can compare it to.

I love aerial shots, thank you for this.

In a recent GO magazine one of the readers submitted aerial shots of Kilimanjaro, taken from a normal jumbo jet. There were no clouds and the pilot got permission to do a low fly over the area.... once in a lifetime opportunity !

Lovely! Please do this again later in the year when the Jacarandas are in full bloom.

Pta is a very pretty city, especially when its purple!

Panaramio ... OK will do.

Took almost 300 images, so maybe I'll select a few more to 'enhance' the overall view.

I don't want to flood the forum with images, nor bore anyone to tears, but interested parties are welcome to view my Pretoria Streetscapes album at: http://s42.photobucket.com/albums/e341/ ... eetscapes/

There are quite a few images of the city, and the blooming Jacarandas.

I was lucky enough on a flight back from London a few years back that the JHB airport was really busy so we circled for about 45 mins - the path took us right over the CBD, Ellis park, Sandton, Rosebank etc...

it was amazing to see familiar sights from the air, puts a lot into perspective - just wish I had a camera on me then

Nice . PTA is very much like paarl to me. Glad to see tat the alien and water sucking jacarandas are still thriving :)

Apparently they are not allowing any new jacarandas to be planted and waiting for the current ones to die off.
