They had this thing last year where they moved away from Old mutual and now they are trying to merge with another scheme.

They are still up and running but sent us a letter stating that last year the claims exceeded the income by R 100 million.

Just make sure that the the company has a reasonable size patient base (your medscheme, discovery etc), that you don't have huge co-payments for procedures and that you are not too limited in the choice of hospitals/Doctors you can visit.

Also - if you are opting for a hospital plan. Make sure it does not only kick in after 3 days of being admitted.

Last yer we got notice that they were changing Old mutual as their financial backer, this was confusing as it was unclear weather Oxygen or Old Mutual were the problem. Then they had some sort of vote about joining another medical scheme, then we received the new pricing for this year along with the benefits. Basically we pay about R1000 each and we get a hospital plan with R400 odd going in to MSA. Previously we had a much smaller amount in MSA but had specific benefits where they would cover things like Dentist visits etc..... now its all MSA. Obviously this is a very sneaky way at cutting down the benefits rather drastically.
Then this month we received a letter saying that a merger was in its final phases but due to the nature of the deal it was still confidential, they also mentioned the financial problems.

I think we will start looking soon... either Bonitas or Medihelp. I have heard a lot of good things about Bonitas and my parents are on Medihelp.
The nice thing about medihelp is that they moved my parents up to a better package because they never claimed, thats really good.

Sitting here staring out the window at the children playing at school...we're going out for lunch in a few minutes - boss is taking us to Buccaneers. It's a 'thank fuck the auditors have finally left' lunch. It's the company's first external audit, and they were hopelessly unprepared. Wow...creditors was a mess. Lucky me - my new job.
