Avatar taking some heat

Avatar taking some heat

Postby Diva » Wed Jan 13, 2010 8:25 am

It seems Avatar is taking heat from all corners.
First it has been accused of racism from all walks of life for its story: white guy joins Natives and eventually saves them.
People are asking why the hero in these stories (lets face it, Dances with Wolves and Pocahontas followed the same storyline) need to have a white hero and the Natives cannot save themselves.

There is also the fact that its storyline IS something we have seen over and over again.

The Vatican has also come out with a lukewarm review of the movie, accusing it of being superficial in its eco-message and simplistic. More significantly it has taken the movie to task for the worshipping of Nature as a substitute for religion.

Have you seen the movie? What did you think of it? Agree or disagree?

Sadly I ahvent seen it. I hear its pretty good, but hearing from you that it is like pocahontas and such, makes me worry a little.
However, what is it with churches believing that any kind of conservation movement is worshiping Nature as a substitute for religion?
I have heard this a number of times, and I just dont understand it. What is so wrong with wanting to actually protect this planet we all live on?

A very accurate review of the movie:
http://blog.oregonlive.com/madaboutmovi ... ie-mo.html

It's a movie folks - not a mission statement.

Yes, the plot is not unique, having been used dozens of times before, but thats not the point.

The point pure and simple as that it's 2 1/2 hours of great escapist entertainment - and a fine example of the art of movie making.

Its CGI porn.... love it for what it is.

I agree that they could have made more of an effort with the story but TBH I really wasn't worring about the storyline till I left the cinema

This is just a bunch of dicks jumping on the Avatar bandwagon, and trying to get some free airtime based on the film's success.

it's a good example of movie technology, especially all the actor-to-cgi facial expressions and of course the RealD 3d effects are pretty amazing..

other than that, long boring movie in my opinion

some group was even complaining about Sigourney Weavers character smoking and that being a bad influence

LOL, thats not surprising.

Who cares?

I mean isn't it a bad influence showing the strip mining of a planet, or walking around with armed to the teeth?

maybe what they'd prefer producers put their money into is 2 hour movies of watching people pray in church

Terry and I enjoyed it thoroughly, awesome movie experience, loved the 3D. Take it for what it is, a visually stunning fantasy. I reckon it's ludicrous to go to see a fantasy and then bitch that it's not realistic enough, or has some profound influence on our society, total bollocks.

I haven't seen it yet but I've heard so many good things about it I think I'll have to but on the other hand I'm not keen on movies that are all effects and no storyline so I haven't quite made up my mind. Also I havent seen a 3D movie yet so this might just be a good first?

There is a storyline - just not a unique one.
But that was intentional. Cameron didn't want viewers scratching their heads, or trying to keep up with the plot - it had to feel familiar.

The movie is more than just a visual feast, more than a sum of it's parts.

Any person who enjoys movies - should see this - simply cause it's a prime example of the art and what is possible.

Ok, so I went see it last night and I must say I enjoyed it. I was a little skeptical before the time but it turned out to be a pretty good movie and I'm glad I saw it. That being said I very much doubt I would sit through it again though, it was just a little too long.

My mom's gonna see it tomorrow for the second time.

Every show is still practically fully booked during the week.
