I posted this topic last week after yet another horrible set of downtime and icky speed.

Thanks for the feedback and comments, they're really very useful :(

For the sake of keeping you all in the loop, here's what's happened so far:

In the lead for hosting is Real Webspace with a newly created package just for us which will come in at R249.00 p/m for the hosting. The package seems pretty good and hopefully will be fine for all our needs. An alternative is dedicated server hosting which is (while good) certainly gulp-worthy price-wise.

A change to a co.za domain will help the transfer and thanks to you guys we've decided to keep the name Dementia :D I think most likely the .co.za address will stay open as a forwarder to the co.za (don't worry if this is all geek to you) and will come in at a measly cost of R50 a year.

Our forum software license runs out at the end of this year as well so there's another choice there. We can either stay with vBulletin and purchase either a leased ($85 /year) or an owned ($160 once off) license or we can hit up another of the popular forum softwares which range from free to similar pricing. Examples are Invision Power Board, Small Machines Forum, PhpBB and so on.

It's been suggested that we set up a donations idea (accompanied by incentives which we'll have to come up with) and if you approve, we'll see about setting up a dementia specific bank account that can receive funds. Full accounting will be handled by our finance lady Metoo.

So... comments please!

Hmmm, the forum software is abit of a bugger... Invasion is good as far as I know but the PhpBB I am not 100% fond of. I would say we do a donation thing and help out buying the vBulletin, specially as Anti has put so much effort into setting it up as is. R1200 is not all that much anyway, R100 from 12 members and its sorted.

Sounds good, I rate we do a little fund raising and go fo the full licence.
Set up the donations, perhaps a paypal type thing ? I heard there was an SA version of that.

Only if the beads are attached the nekkid ladies.

Will chat to the bank today to see about a proper account. I have a paypal account that could be used to pay the Vbulletin license if that's what's needed.

We'll be hopefully changing hosts very soon to RealWebSpace as the current hosts are really beginning to grind on my (and I'm sure your) tits.

At the moment we're looking at changing to the new hosting providers from around the 20th of December with downtime fromt the 20th to the 2nd of Jan '08. It unfortunately does have to be a fair amount of time due to the amount of stuff to be done as well as yearly maintenance.

If you lease or buy what is the difference when it comes to upgrades and bugfixes?

Do you get them forever either way?

Either way you get one year of support/free updates.

All in favour of having the Paris Avitar on the 21st and 28th of December?
